Childhood Memories: Halloween Costumes

Published by Kit S

When I was little, Mom didn’t do a lot of holiday decorating. Back then, decorating was usually reserved for Christmas and sometimes Thanksgiving. I was about the only decoration we had at Halloween.

At Halloween, I used to dress up and Mom would cart me around to the houses of family friends, where I would show off my costume and get candy. The first time I really remember Halloween, I was about four years old. I wore a fairy or Tinkerbell costume, similar to the one below. I think the reason I remember the costume so well was because after we did the trick-or-treat deal, I was allowed to play dress up with the costume. I can still remember those plastic wings and how much fun I had!

There were a few other costumes I remember almost as well. Once I went as Cinderella. I liked playing with the mask. My most favorite costume of all time was one my grandmother made for me. Grandmother sewed and she took time to make me a very simple “gypsy” skirt. The costume consisted of a full skirt, simple shirt, and loads of bangles and beads. Again, after the “candy run”, I remember using the outfit in my dress up wardrobe. It was my last costume and used in play for years.

I thought this was a really sweet version of the Tinkerbell costume I wore. Go ahead and give your little girl a memory that lasts a life time.

Autumn Memories: The Fair

Published by Kit S

As I was working on my Autumn graphics, I was thinking about how much I like this season. The kids go back to school; it gets cooler; the leaves change color; there are quite a few holidays; we have several festivals; and the fair comes to town.

It’s not just those things that make me like Fall. It has something to do with my memories. I say I had a regular childhood but I guess to some, it might have been special. My family and I did a lot of things together. One of my most cherished memories is of the fair.

It was just a small town fair beside the river but from a child’s perspective it seemed absolutely huge. I’ve never been a “ride” sort of person and neither were my parents. Other than the kiddie rides, the only thing I rode every year was the double ferris wheel. Part of the reason for that was the ferris wheel was the only thing my daddy would ride. It was the same for many years. I can remember being afraid of the height and snuggling close to Daddy as the seat would swing and rotate. When I would finally work up the nerve to open my eyes, Daddy would point out things in the distance and up in the sky for me to focus on. When the ride was over, we would walk around the fair playing games and eating.

The fair food was another good memory. My favorites were candy and caramel apples, elephant ears, corn dogs, corn on the cob (on a stick), and best of all, cotton candy. If I try hard, I can still smell aroma of the food and feel the cool river breeze on my cheeks.

Thanks for helping me revisit a special time and place. What are your fond memories of the season?
