The Truth About Famous Scots

Scotland is famous for its thistles, kilts, and the Loch Ness Monster. However, famous Scots may not be so well known to you. Quite a few Scots have played major roles in U.S. history and culture but the truth about famous Scots is that you may not realize they are of Scots descent. Here are a few famous Scots you may or may not know.
One of the most famous Scots is the 18th century poet Robert Burns, known as the “Bard of Scotland.” Burns’ contributions are celebrated every year by Scots around the world not only on New Year’s Eve when people sing the song Auld Lang Syne, but also during the annual birthday celebration called Burns Night or Burns Supper. During this yearly event, the Selkirk Grace is given followed by pipers ushering in the haggis. Other Burns poetry is read to honor this man “Scotland’s favorite son.”
William Wallace, played by Mel Gibson in Braveheart, is a true historic figure. He was a 13th century knight and landowner who led the resistance during the Wars of Scottish Independence. He was later executed for treason by King Edward I of England.
Many people don’t realize that Alexander Graham Bell, inventor and creator of first telephone, was born in Scotland. He immigrated to the United States in 1871, opened a school for the deaf in Boston, and submitted his patent for the first telephone in 1876. Just think, if it hadn’t been for this Scotsman, we’d all be still using Morse code.
Former Great Britain Prime Minister Tony Blair was also born in Scotland. Anthony Charles Lynton Blair was a Member of Parliament for seventeen years, ten as Prime Minister. He was the youngest person ever to become Prime Minister.
One of the most easily recognized Scotsmen in the world is Sir Thomas Sean Connery. Sean Connery is an award-winning actor best known for his roles as James Bond 007 and as Indiana Jones’ father in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Connery was knighted by Queen Elizabeth in July 2000.
The Lord of the Rings series of movies is one of the highest grossing series of all time. Billy Boyd, the actor who played the role of Peregrin “Pippin” Took, was born in Scotland. Boyd, an avid surfer and martial artist, has been acting since he was a teenager. He also worked on a script with former cast mate Dominic Monaghan (Merry in The Lord of the Rings). Billy is involved in several artistic endeavors in Scotland.
